Raising healthy tomato seedlings in pro-trays
Strong seedlings mean fewer gaps and an earlier harvest. A step-by-step nursery guide.

Media and trays
Use 98-cell pro-trays filled with sterilised cocopeat mixed with a little vermicompost. Treat the media with Trichoderma to prevent damping-off.
Sowing
Place one seed per cell at about 0.5 cm depth and cover lightly. Stack the trays and cover with plastic for 3–4 days until germination, then spread them out under a shade net.
Care
Water lightly every day with a rose can. After 12–15 days, give a weak spray of 19:19:19 at 3 g per litre. Protect the nursery with a 40–50 mesh insect net to keep whitefly away.
Transplanting
Seedlings are ready in 25–30 days with 4–5 true leaves. Harden them by reducing water for 3–4 days before transplanting, and transplant in the evening.
